hey fellas, going to the dam in a week and still havent booked anything.

Which is the best area to stay for the nightlife? Leidseplein or dam square area? Not worried about locality to coffee shops ias we will be getting around the city.

I know leidseplein is further away from the station by looking at the map, but a few hotels claim its a 15min walk. Not sure about that it looks a lot further

Cheers

If your blazed it'll take a little longer but if your know your way and tank it you can do the station to liedsplien in about 15-20 mins.

i found personally staying up near dam square/red light there was always something going on lots happening but it does get a little much sometimes.
i'd say i've had the most fun staying in the thick of it but either way you'll have fun.

Come out the station and go to the 'Toorist Info' opposite and ask for a 'Strippen Cart' - this is a bus ticket and lets you jump on and off the trams as and when, they also give you a street map with the bus routes on it :oldtoker:
This was a 2012 Barneys Blue Cheese Moon Diary I can't get piccie loading together, (I'd rather be in me garden) so no diary.

The old Strippenkaart has been replaced by something like London's Oyster Card, which is a right pain, to be frank. You either buy an OV-chipkaart for around €7, not refundable, and load money onto it, or you pay €2.60 instead of €1 for each trip. And you have to touch your card, or single ticket, on leaving the tram as well as on entry.

The best thing about A'dam is that it really isn't very big, so where you're staying isn't all important. Pretty much everything is walkable, as I discovered when I went on the day of the public transport strike and had to walk from Amstel Station. It looks miles away on a map, and people act as though it's far too far for any normal person to walk, but it's half an hour's walk to Centraal Station. Admittedly, it's the dullest walk in the city or possibly the world, but even so.

Leidseplein is a nicer less seedy part of Amsterdam then Dam square. The hotel rooms seem a lot nicer than around dam square and cheaper, plus you dont seem to get the stag party's staying. It is easy to get from Leidseplein to dam square just a one long street.Another place to look at, which is in between both places is rembrandtplein. There is some night life there and a couple a coffee shops (not the best ones).

IMHO Niuewmarket is the best place to stay in Dam. I am no expert but must have stayed in Dam upwards of forty times over the past twenty years. I have stayed in most areas of the city and have found Niuewmarket to be ideal. Came back three days ago.......miss it already
