in a way they support battery farms and actually increase their profits because the farmers dont have to pay to dispose of the birds :(

I have kept a few ex-batteryfarm hens in the past, one of them even became a pet,I called her rather imaginatively "Cluck" she used to follow me around the garden,I would fork over some soil and she would watch attentively till a worm was exposed,I think I had her for about four years till she died in her sleep :D

I kind of agree with you Joolz, but as the birds are there now and there's not much we can do about that (unless we can convince everyone to only buy free range), but anyone with the space can give them a loving caring home for the rest of their years, and to let them roam free.

I'd take them in if I had the space

when i was a kid, we kept hens, ducks, goats, etc. the first time we got some ex-battery hens from the market, it was a shock. we let them out into the run where the other birds were kept, and the battery hens didnt even know how to scrape about the ground and eat, their feet were deformed, claw-like from spending their whole lives standing on the wire spars in their cages. feathers all worn rough and bare, with constant rubbing on the cages. really sad to see

true but quite often the rest of their years isn't actually that long after the battery farms have finished abusing them, I have heard of plenty of people getting upset because their birds didn't even last as far as regrowing their feathers plus they are bred for intensive egg production and are prone to prolapses of the egg duct, more so as they get older, I did look into taking a load of ex batts but after talking to a few old hands they said the cons out weighed the pros

Are batteries going to be banned at some point in the UK or will it go on forever?

To be honest the realities of life for 'Free range' hens are pretty dreadful,by and large. On paper, they have to have a certain amount of room and access to daylight etc. but in reality a lot of commercial premises for the production of food from animals would shock most meat eaters, I think. It's just hard to look after hundreds of birds to a really good standard. The only way you have any hope of eating meat/eggs that has been treated really well is if it is raised by you or someone you know quite well.

I think battery cages will always exist because a really depressing amount of people don't care where their food comes from, and just want it cheap...

I spoke to a battery-farm operator over in Asia who actually ordered his cages from a UK firm  My mate has 3000 roosters living on his farm in the middle of the jungle, nothing like healthy free-range,their feathers gleam and they exude good health :ninja:
