I deserve.  Those words always send a chill through my bones, as it was the last two, intelligible anyway, words uttered by a dying friend. When I hear them, I'm back in The Nam.

 

  Sanchez triggered a bouncing betty, when I was walking about 30ft behind him.  We had just cleared through My Lai 4.  Not many know there was more than one ville called My Lai (pronounced me lie).   An appropriate name for the sullen villagers we questioned not 2 minutes before, and the lying motherfucker Head Man said "No VC here.  We see no VC".  That lie sealed two fates.   Sanchez and the Gook.

 

We had seen and done a lot of shit in our 9 months in the boonies in the 173rd Airborne.   We spent our entire motherfuckin year in the bush, bein resupplied.   No fuckin sittin in safe bases and flyin in for a few days, then back to showers and beer.  Fuckin REMFs.   

 

I ran forward to Sanchez.  The betty had detonated level with his belly button. The blast had opened his gut, and intestines bulged out. His stomach was punctured and the acid pouring onto his exposed guts made his screaming, guttural agony, even harder to bear.  A piece had blown upwards through bottom of his mouth removing some of his tongue.  

 

We both knew he was dying.  I saw in his eyes the fear, and agony of the dying soldier.  Id tried not to make friends, because I saw what it did to those gettin short, losin their best buddies, but Sanchez irrepressible smile,  humour that found giggles when we were lying in waterlogged fox holes, with fucken leeches suckin on us, and willing to give shirt off his back to help anyone less fortunate than him,  well I couldn't help but like him, as he was the only beam of light when our skin was white in triple canopy jungle.   

 

I was openly fucken weeping, when he pulled me toward him, and he tried to speak, but his tongue was so fucken mangled, I struggled to understand him.  I cleared some of the blood out of his mouth, and he spoke to me again.   

 

I (garbled word) deserve this.   I deserve this.    His screaming lessened as the morphine worked, and he wasn't in pain whilst i held his hand as he died.

 

I became an emotional granite block, losing Sanchez.  I let nobody get that close to me again, because I've seen what it does to me.  I don't blame the gooks.  I blame the US.   That's now, after years thinking I'm a soldier, I follow orders.    But back then, I hated the gooks, because they were killing and maiming us.    Back then, I smiled as I put a .556MM Full Metal Jacket round, through the forehead of the the village Head Man.

 

I don't think Sanchez deserved what he got.    I think I deserved it a whole lot more than he did, because I'd hurt a lot of people, and only thought of myself.  I'd LED a sinful life.     When I got back to the World,  I got a new tatoo, with Sanchez, last words, lest i forgot.

I deserve to win cause I once saved a man's life who was choking to death on his roast beef dinner in the pub. Smashing him squarely between the shoulder blades, eventually out came the beef, he sat down wiped his chin and carried on eating. His wife sat their quietly weeping. I sat back down and carried on like it was the most normal thing in the world. True British understatement by all involved. 

I later bumped into him in the urinals. He tried to slip me £20 but I told him I didn't want his money. One day karma would  reward me

Deserve is a strong word as i dont feel i deserve to win any more than anybody else.
