@RonSwanson69 you don't need to buy new soil every time, I've been re using mine for over a year as have many others. Thriftyness ftw.

iv'e ordered a 11litre wilma system and thinking of using pebbles, i'm a bit thick and always thought i'd never get it right, but now i have some help. i will be starting with compost till it runs out will be 2or3 grows

What about Carbon Gold? I'm planting into their seed compost tomorrow so I'll see how it goes. The mix looks pretty nice with coco, biochar, wormcasts and seaweed.  I won't be messing around with PH or EC, instead will be treating it like soil with some added stuff for feed and microbes. If I understand it correctly,  the biochar holds onto water, microbes, nutrients etc so apparently functions like compost, or works even better if the spiel is to be trusted.
