Keeping up with breeders in 2021

20 posts in this topic

Is it all instagram these days?

I used to read icmag and a few other forums last time i grew but they seem nearly dead now. Forums in general are like that to be fair with only well run ones like uk420 bucking the trend somewhat.

I despise facebook so im not going to join "the gram" but i see it mentioned a lot so i just wondered if thats where everybody went?  or is there anywhere else where you can get news about what breeders are upto i might have missed?

Forums are dying in all areas not just grow sites..

Forums are somewhat old fashioned now, I guess.

I used to frequent a couple of sea fishing forums back in the day but they've both pretty much moved onto facebook now.

A lot of people slag insta off but it does have it's uses for us growers :yep:. Though it doesn't have even a tenth of the grow knowledge available on here if you're willing to put the time and energy in to reading diaries and threads.

I've tried a few weed forums over the years but always use uk420. I just try and avoid the political threads :bag: lol

I love digging around for various specialised knowledge and wisdom on dusty, decades-old threads on forums. No real chance of that on the 'book or the 'gram.

I follow a few breeders on IG that don't post anywhere else but it's just for some eye-candy when I'm bored at work. I get lists emailed from them so I wouldn't feel like I'm missing out by not going on there.

I started using ig only because thats where most breeders post. Hate using it though and barely ever look at it, if it is really a big deal then it wouldn't be long until someone posts about it here.

I try look at other forums now and then too, but most have clunky interfaces or just look a bit shite lol

Plus swathes of trolling, aggy dickheads are an instant turnoff... unless its outraged comments complaining they got banned from uk420, generally for being trolling aggy dickheads, in which case no harm sticking the knife in some more lol

So yeah not really surprising they're mostly dead.

imo, the trouble with sites like ig is the information is much more one way, there no real sense of communication or discussion of strains.

A breeder just dumps pikkies of what they want to sell and waits for the money - it all just seems shallow to me.  Know I could be totally wrong tho - i don't use ig, so is only an opinion.

In terms of the op's title "keeping up with breeders in 2021", I don't see how this year would be any different from last, or any.  Any breeder / farm / outlet you have previously purchased from should still be in business, just continue to buy from them the same as you have done?

Last time i grew was 2010. icmag was busy then i probably cant even remember half of the names but there used to be a lot of interesting stuff written by many interesting people and it just seems mostly gone now. i meant that stuff more than just what people are selling.

social media does seem to be more one way. its a race to the bottom imho. in the early 2000's i used to go on playstation and cable hacking forums, there was a concept where you "would not be spoon fed" and had to do some research first to be able to ask relevant questions. nowadays people ask for streams or whatever from their small group of friends and get bad advice about their one specific way they have been taught to do something from 10 different people.

IG is the classic style over substance kind of thing , not to say there aren't some good pics on there and people use it because it's easy

I'm glad I actually saw the early days of the internet , I'm sure some people now think facebook is the internet

I was doing a bit research on brassinosteroids using the Google trick for searching this site when a thread popped up on either thc talk or mr nice forum saying that we all worship ot1 and that he doesn't really exist lol.

Was a good laugh and read.

IG is fine for browsing bud porn most of the people I follow on there are members here anyway. But you can't beat this archive we have here. I do worry sites like this have their days numbered.

I follow a few subs on Reddit as well which is slightly better for discussion but it's full of toxic clueless arseholes I put a picture of my Disco Biscuit up on there and had some guy say it was shite because of the fox tails, insisted it was an undesirable trait. First time I'd heard that one to be fair.

But the convenience of whacking a pic up on IG is so simple. I do like it for when certain big names I follow go live that's probably my favourite feature. I guess it's a difference in the audience perhaps the people who stick around here are either very knowledgeable or very keen to learn and the ones that stick around are generally good eggs.

Ain't nowt out there that can replace this site in my book.

Yup I came of age in the golden era of the internet where complete troglodytes didn't have a clue how to use it and you needed half a brain. What I'd give to go back to those days. I've been using forums for various subjects for about 25 years now most of them are dead this is by far the most active one that I'm still a member of and one of the only ones that still functions as a forum with proper forum etiquette.

A face lift to modern forum software would be the best thing to happen on here to be honest. Fresh design and image uploader. Rollitup changed theirs a few years back and it is so much nicer now, but still full off fuckwits.

Instagram has no real value to me it's basically dump some pics get some likes (makes you feel good - bullshit) and waste a lot of time but that's it for me. Handy for breeders / grow shops.
