Can you sleep with your grow?

22 posts in this topic

Kindly asking for your advice and critique,

Planning my first build.  I live in a house share, I have a small bedroom. For space reasons I sleep in one of those kinda bunk beds that only have the top bed so you get floor space underneath etc.

My rough Dimensions  for growbox under the bed are

70cm / 2.29 ft length

66cm / 2.16 ft width

80cm / 2.6 ft height

I plan to make a frame with wooden battens, plasterboard outside then fill with celotex insulation then plasterboard on the inside and paint white or mylar. I did this with heat and noise isolation in mind.

My light will probably be a DIY samsung strip light of 100-130 watt.

I will obviously need a carbon filter but seeing some inline fan videos they're bloody jet engines. PC fans and the like are widely used I've seen on micro grows but looking on this forum are regarded as no good.  I was thinking of getting an AC Cloudline Infinity 6" so I can run on a lower RPM. again I dont know how loud this will be. And I assume I need to be circulating a certain CFM for the carbon to be effective.

My top concerns are Noise and smell, but mostly noise. I work and sleep in this room so If it turns out irritating then it'll be a no go. Before I go any deeper into the project I wanted to know whether I'm being realistic. The annoying this is I won't know until I actually buy all the kit as I have no experience.

cheers

I find it harder to sleep on the rare occasions my fans are ever switched off.

Monkeypig, pumps can be noisy (if you're having a hydro grow) - don't worry about fans - my grows just need a bit of ventilation that's all - if you're bubbling with DWC or drip the plants will be getting plenty oxygen through their roots anyway - and air in the cupboard will be pressured

smell - depends on strain, how secret you want it - otherwise enjoy drifting off to sleep with an aroma even better than Gwyneth Paltrows vageen candle!

Just get a 4"RVK fan and wac1 controller. Keeps It super quite while not breaking the bank.of you want a wiring tutorial etc let me know.  It's the clip on fans that do my nut more.

I have a similar size grow space in a bedroom wardrobe. I use a 4" RVK fan connected to a wac1 controller. On setting 2, 3 and 4 I cannot hear the fan running at all, on setting 5 I can hear a really slight noise, but this is softer than an aquarium I have next to this space and cannot be heard from a couple of feet away. I also use acoustic ducting to connect everything together.

Bear in mind that fans running by themselves are a lot louder than fans connected to a carbon filter and ducting. The whooshing noise yo uare hearing is air movement, but this is reduced once a filter is connected and can be reduced further by using insulated ducting.

Hope this helps.

I guess its different for everyone.

I work shifts and when I am tired I can have a party in downstairs and it want wake me up. At the moment I sleep next to a tant with 3 fans inside, 8" td silent and dehumidifier and I have no problems.

I've lived a good while inside a grow room. Used to have to get up when the lights came on & sleep when they went off. Surprised I didn't grow a few inches. Sent me round the bend.

You get used to the fans after a while.

Growing in a house share will be a challenge. You get used to the smell & don't realise that it's stinking. Gotta be on the ball with gloves and a change of clothes.

A small set up won't be impossible though.

Shouldn't have a crazy amount of heat coming from a 130w led. Could cover the fan in expanding foam to try absorb some of the noise.

& might have a bit of added Co2 from living in the room. Sing a few songs to your plants haha

I've managed to scavenge loads of celotex off cuts so wont be able to do that unfortunately :( otherwise i would and just aluminium tape it together.

A 4" a1 or l1 rvk should be fine whichever the lower powered one is (a1 i think ?) Nice and quiet and if its inside your box you might hear a slight hum, but when that slight hum turns in to homegrown with love weed that into turn means you never have to buy weed off chavy little shits anymore you will develop a deep love and respect for that hum !

Huuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmm.

You get used to the fans dude, I have been sharing my bedroom with 120 x 120 flower tent, 120 x 60 veg tent and 60 x 60 drying tent for years, extract fans and filters in all 3 plus an intake fan in flower tent.

@growinggold luckily those days are in the past.. I hope haha

Two words come to mind when thinking about commercial grows... FUCK THAT

Id take 5 lights to myself over 85 lights with other people. The grower always gets the shit end of the stick.

Same here, the constant white noise blocks out some other low level sounds that would normally disturb you. If there is a power cut the lack of fan actually wakes me up.

It's not the same for everyone though, a mate of mine had to go crazy with fan speed controllers, soundproofing and insulated ducting etc before he could sleep with a fan on at all.
