250w hps height in a 80x80x160 tent

Hi, so ive done a lot of reading about 250w hps height and i have got multiple sources saying 2 - 3foot from canopy and the same amount saying 8 - 12 inchs from canopy..

This is the only bit of information i can not find any reason to either of the advised heights, can anyone please shed some light on this?

Remember the lower the light the less spread it will have, a 250 is going to struggle in a 80x80. I use a 400 in that size, I have it about 12inches from the tops. A 250 would obviously be safer a bit closer, just keep your hand over the back of the plant for awhile, if it's too hot for your hand it's too hot for the plants. I imagine 10inches would be fine, but like I say, just check to be sure.
