cloning help- root riot cubes

18 posts in this topic

I took cuttings 2 weeks ago in root riot cubes, I've noticed. they dried out real quick so I dipped them in a solution again to soak u the cubes

is this the best thing to do?

when use to take cuts years ago I used Rockwell and they always rooted quick but these root riot cubes hit the same.

humidity is 99% with no vents open in a heated prop

temp floats between 23-25

any help would be appreciated

it's best to have the blocks wet but not saturated. Cuts won't root well in soggy blocks. I give mine a little squeeze to get the excess out.

Try this guide, never fails for me

Do you air them every day? I switched to bubble methods for my clones a while ago as it's just so much easier. Even in Rockwool though, I used to take hundreds at a time and I never expected to lose one using nothing more than plain tap water. What I've found clones like is pampering. Knowing you're there. Visit them once a day and take each cutting out, turn it around, make sure everything is perfect... if in cubes or some other medium, simply ensure the medium isn't too wet (else risk moulds that attack the stem - effectively killing the cutting) and they get a ten minute or so airing. Taking each cutting out helps ensure you give them the 10 minutes. Is the heated prop necessary? I've never used one aside from the winter months in cold grow spots.

Also, clean the prop daily of any condensation on the lid.

I switched to this guide / jiffy’s / prop  over the root riot cubes (as always had similar issues)

i find the jiffy’s so much cheaper and my rooting rate is about 90% after 10 / 12 days of misting

open the prop lid no and then but I'm sure keeping the prop closed all the time would help?

I think most people would say this is completely wrong.

its not rocket science, KISS.

When taken out of context like that, yes. I actually went on to explain what that pampering meant.

Also... even without correct context, that statement on its own merely says what 'I've' found... so how can anyone say that what I've found to work in my own grows is completely wrong?

I clone in open air with no prop... you don't need a prop. All a prop is good for is keeping your medium wet. If you used cubes or something else and you had no prop, then you would merely need to wet the medium more regularly. I clone in a DIY bubbler usually these days... I don't need to keep the medium wet because the bubbles do it for me.

take each cutting out

With all due respect to your method, humidity is the key to fast and successful cloning. Whilst your unusual method may work for you, it is standard practice to create a very humid environment and leave the cuts for approximately 14 days give or take undisturbed.

Peace

agreed, more than 1 way to skin a cat but I can tell you what is working for you doesn't for the majority of people/environments. i.e

its not the just the medium that needs to be moist, the air needs to be as humid as possible, which again unless you have a steam room, not the best advice.
