hi all, sorry if this is the wrong place for this. I've been lurking these boards for a few days religiously but just been approved. What I can't seem to find out is;

I'm growing from seed in a propagator-

Do I have the light on, or does that go on once they're seedlings?

Do I keep it in a dark place or put it in the greenhouse while it's still seeds?

Thanks so much

depends. you can put it in a warm place until they germ, if your cab with the light on is your only warm place, its just right.

thanks so much Basil. So if I put them in the greenhouse in the propagator with the light on they'll germinate ok? I'm scared I'm making conditions too hot for them you see

thts up to you, you have to test what is too hot, have you a thermometer? above 30 is too high, between 21ish and 25 is about right. i would germ in the house first but im sure the greenhouse will work, its getting warmer.

You shouldn't need any light until the seed pops through the soil, you'd just be wasting energy!

@bazil brush has said it... Light on or off, it doesn't matter... The seeds in the ground germ in the dark, then surface - so long as the conditions are good, they'll pop! They don't want strong light when they are very wee though and, as has been said, you will be safer popping them indoors because its a more constant and stable temp.

I usually pop seeds in coco, in the dark; then they go under a 15watt CFL (they can take way more than that, but its enough to get them started). They move under stronger light when they have a few proper leaves out...

Good luck!

so it's been about a week and a half and out of the 6 seeds, 3 sprouted and became super cute mini plants. I put them into 4l pots today potted with canna pro plus and put them in the greenhouse. I just used super cheap plastic pots- I hope that's ok? Unfortunately it looks like it's going to rain right up to the weekend

Your in a greenhouse, so what if it rains.

Did you protect against slug. Put them high up on a shelf and use some slug defenses.

Cheap plastic pots only matter if they break, as long as it hold the soil your good.

warmth might be more of an issue. my g house is only 13C today.

ahh yeah, my mum gave me some slug pellets so I've put a ring of the stuff around each plant, would have ended up with a very high and satisfies snail otherwise! good to know about the pots, thanks!
