ph
Canna + Coir + problems II

Ok, the new problem...

My PH is a bit low for my feed. So that is going to be adjusted.

However, for those who asked in a previous thread what the PH and EC were, well I splashed out and bought myself a crissy prezzie of an EC and PH meter, they arrived today.

I have tried el-cheap-o route, splashed out on a couple of middle of the range meters that were about the £35 mark each. Normally about £99 the pair, got then on deal via a trader that I have used several times for substantial purchases and got them both for £69.99. So these are not your £20 grow shop cheap as chips, ok for a grow meters.

The PH meter was easy to set up, there is an option to set the alternative end standards of 4.0 and 10.0 on the PH scale, I just went with the Neutral PH 7 standard for now.

The EC meter was pretty much same sort of deal, I happened to have bought, quite by accident a month or so back, EC28 buffer... Single button push calibration... Couldn't ask for more.

OK now, those people asking what my water EC and PH is.

This is a current state that IS GOING TO BE CORRECTED.

  • Feed mix...
    • PH 4.3
    • EC 1.3

  • Separate Water (for all uses, including adding more water to the pot when dry between feeds)
    • PH 4.8 (Originally I set the PH to 7 for a baseline, was aiming for PH5 when PH was too high)
    • EC 1.0

The water I used to water and other things like spraying was aimed at being PH 5 as I needed to drop the PH of the water in the pot as it was a bit high, the test paper system I used was pretty good guide and PH had risen to above 7.

So now I can make the required changes to the current feed mix, readjust the water back to PH of 7.

My main water (Water) is set to PH7 for a reason of its general water for everything from used in premixing feeds, spraying the p[lant for moisture, the tent walls to increase humidity if needed, etc.

My feed has been adjusted and its now PH5.8

I had dropped the PH as a drastic measure to bring the pots PH back down as it had risen.

I still have a fussy plant (BTW) it hates being watered. I water i and it lets me know. I leave it until the moisture meter is bleeping like a bad boy at me and its well happy.

I think my plant thinks its cactus.

So to update that previous set of figures

  • PH 5.8
  • EC 1.3 (I have yet to introduce any CalMag)

Separate Water (for all uses, including adding more water to the pot after adjusting PH between feeds)

  • PH 7.0
  • EC 1.0

And today is a watering day... wish me luck, I expect junior will complain as usual.

What ec is your water before adding any nutes, remember you need to add this to your overall ec reading.

If your base water is 0.4 and you then add nutrient to 1.3 then your actual ec is 0.9,

I wouldnt use any plain water or nutrient water out of the specified ph range recommended by the manafacturer.

I have been experimenting with readings and my tap water...

PH 8.4

EC 0.3

That means that my EC 1.0 is spot on for the phase I am in.

No sooner have I spoken and the cactus is moaning again.

I left the pot until the moisture meter was reading below 1 on its scale of 1 to 10, it was bone dry I could blow on the top surface and coir would blow off... Thats how dry the pot got and it was very happy in that state.

I water it with 500ml of feed and water.

Today I see the same issue starting again on new leaves with the tips going brown...

As I demonstrated to a friend whose knowledgeable, there is no drain issue, there is no aeration issues, their is no issue anywhere and I have gone around the houses with trying various things to resolve the problem.

I could understand the plant reacting like this if I was dumping 2 or 3 litres on it in one serving or the water was ice cold but the water and feed mix are at 22 degrees Celsius.

This is why I think this plant thinks it is a cactus.large.DSC_1729_web.jpglarge.DSC_1728_web.jpg

You might be able to make out the points of the leaves are changing colour, the ones below have definitely started losing tips...
