What compost do you guys use?

30 posts in this topic

Good evening everyone,

going to start growing two new plants on friday as i think ive got to cut my losses with my older plants (stem snap).

My first few grows ive used Westland compost with added John Innes. The growth was slow i felt and wonder how much the compost may have effected the grow.

Does anyone else recommend anything else?

Many Thanks for any advice received :bong:

Are you actually looking for an organic compost?   You dont say but its in the organic compost forum.

Levingtons original multipurpose isnt bad but its fairly scarce and not organic afaik.

Is that compost or soil?

I'm settling on bio canna +, fuck it. I add stuff to it but it's a lovely fluffy base. Expensive, though.

I've found CANNA to be one of the more consistent brands. I like consistency. I'd put up with stuff that was less than perfect if it never changed, probably even sing it's praises. None of that getting-to-know-you awkwardness again out of the blue.... I've been a nomad for a while and I just want to settle now.

...heh. Truth be told, swap a few words here-or-there, and this post would work for a couple of areas in life.

In the past I used Canna but this year I'm using House & Garden Bat Special and the results are encouraging so far.

I recently cleared some lawn space for a greenhouse so instead of binning the turf I've got a compost bin and thrown a load in there along with the usual grass clippings, papers, cardboard, veg trimmings, teabags etc.

Hopefully this time next year I'll have some good quality usable compost.

Right, from memory, westland is one of the better multi-purpose composts. These 'standard' composts will do the job just fine, but....

Canna specialist composts tend to have more nutes and a lighter composition. You will defo notice a positive difference in plant growth.

When I couldn't get to a grow shop the MP I used to keep me eye open for is New Horizon peat-free. This stuff is organic but as weak as shit! However with a bit of root grow, roots love it! As long as you accept it has almost no nutes and you need to feed from the off almost, some fine results can be had. Almost like growing hydro in Coco....

I've found Westlands ok, Jacks Magic is good, but I like to put a bit of coco in there with it, best off building your own though really if practicable, can tailor a bit more then via EWC and what's fed to the worms etc...one day I'll have somewhere to put a bin for em I hope.
