'Autotransformer' fan controller

I'm searching for variac fan controllers and these keep popping up on the regular online auction and river related websites. Rated at 1.5amps

Are they a variac fan controller or something different? Maybe a 5 step transformer going by the 5 voltage settings ?

So many threads I've read with seperate terms and mixed advice! All I know is that my fan (150mm rvk) hum's like hell with my cheap £10 plug in controller, but at ~70% the air flow is almost silent and still moving a ton of air.

So is one of these suitable for £50 or do I need to spent £60+ on a variac and get on with some DIY ?

Yeah bro, that's what I use.£50 of that auction site. Works perfectly well and totally silent. I run twin 6"rvks on mine and it's always set on setting 1 or 2. So quiet compared to before I used one :)

Excellent, this fans like a hurricane in my little grow space "Overkill" comes to mind.

Bits are slowly falling in to place for a stealthy grow though :) .

A speed controller is a must for a stealthy grow op bro, what a difference it makes. One of the best buys I've made and £50 well spent :yep:

Just checked there bro and it's not a Honeywell, it's a Sentera Controls product. Looks the same as all the others that I've seen though. They're probably all the same products but badged up differently for different distributors

ETA Just googled the Honeywell fan controllers and I didn't see one that looked like mine so it might not be the same type as mine.

thats a "auto transformer" wired with 5 settings & its not a variac, it'll work but your better buying a variac yourself & a bit of diy, its a doddle, trust me :yep:
