Hiding seedlings on a windowsill?

18 posts in this topic

Is there a simple way to hide seedlings on a windowsill (1st floor) without blocking out sunlight? What I want is some kind of screen that you can't see through but allows all the UV rays to come through - a bit like a pair of fake Rayban sunglasses.

BTW, to anyone thinking about growing plants on a windowsill, don't assume no one could ever see them from the outside! I think it's a good idea to stand outside and look at your window from different angles just to make sure. And don't forget about the window cleaner or houses across the street that might overlook your home.

Yeah, I was thinking of that; I never have plants of any kind on my window so it might look a bit odd, but yeah.. I guess that's probably the way to go. Maybe something flowery or something. On the other hand, would it really be safe or would a passing copper (and we get a lot of them in my street) still spot the odd-plant-out?

You can get opaque privacy film to cover the glass.

If you're that worried, then buy some dried flowers, push individual ones into the seedling soil, let the seedlings push up in between. I'd have a few other flowering plants in there too. Get creative, make it look nice and don't worry. I have to start mine each year in the greenhouse without the Mrs seeing!

Would a simple net curtain be enough to hide what tips of plant they really are & there also a normal thing to see in a window..maybe if your really worried you could double em up...I say this as my mate grew a couple of auto's last year behind a net curtain & had a really good result so I they don't block UV ether...blue skies sb

just so you know, its not the UV rays that your plants need but light in the visible light spectrum (UV is invisible).

A glass windows will also block UV rays , hence why you can't get sunburnt through glass.

Just a little bit of physics knowledge for ya :oldtoker:

UV is invisible to human eyes but if your plants are growing those on them, kill em quick! lol

@dr.gt

Venetian blinds.. yes that might just do the trick, thankyou. I'll have a look in Wilkinson's or B&Q on the weekend and see what they've got.

are you ground floor or up one, if your upstairs just put something in front of the plants that stops at their height, the sun is shining diagonally down so they will still get light but will be invisable from below, try a book or something similar or put them in a foil lined box with some light netting over the top, works for me ;)

I use my windowsill in my front room , The blinds are a dark brown almost black and from outside you can't see shit when they are tilted correctly . My bedroom has 2 windows on either side of the south facing wall and the little on has condensation between the glass that hides plants well , The only reason I have not replaced it
