Dry-ice (CO2) sift and pressing report.

I've been playing about with dry-ice sifting for a year or so, but in small runs. No more - lots of trim, popcorn and entire plants, 5kg of dry ice slabs, a bucket, a 220 micron gauze and a mirror...

I ran two grades of product through, the first was dry trim and popcorn bud from a variety of of my stock plants: Northern Lights, Blues, Skunk, etc.

The second run was an assortment of Attitude freebies, mostly Snowcap, that I won't be cloning.

Using 1,150g of product, I produced 185g of sifted polm, about 155g of it "primo", or first grade, and 30g "secundo".

I could have produced more but I usualy call a halt when there is a noticable darkening of the polm. The residue is usually refluxed in iso to give a 10:1 extraction, so I'll expect up to 100g of dark oil from this too.

I've experimented with pressing the sift with varying results, and several iterations of press and mould later I've built a 10-ton hydraulic press and a stainless steel mould (10mm press plate in a 5mm wall mould) that doesn't buckle under pressure.

(The stainless steel bit is important to me because I process med-grade). I've had good result at about 4 tons pressure with a one-inch square mould (before it warped), but 9 metric tons on a 9cmx9cm plate equals about... enough.

Some primo grade sift was too sticky to push intact from the mould - I rolled some up into a fat tola. Most formed very flexible slabs whether 2 or 10mm thick.. The lower grade "secundo" made a lovely solid passport slate.

Pictures attached: The tolas are sticky primo (Attitude freeby selection), the big and four small squares are another primo (from the NL/skunk trim) and the lighter thin rectangular slab is the secundo. All good stuff.

6 1/2 Oz in old money...

Thanks everyone, hope a bit of Hash porn brightened up your morning!

@@Elephant Face - It's all indoor, urban organic soil grow, and if I was in Malana I wouldn't be sifting it <rubs palms together>

The rest of you: I'm burying it in a hole in my backyard and I'm not answering the door until March.

Have a very merry Yule, to one and all.

dry ice can be found quite easily online mate, not sure about getting it mailed though, you will probably have to look for somewhere local to pick it up.

Hi guys, glad the post is still getting attention. :wink_kiss:

The hash is smoking really well; taste tests reported the flavour reaches a peak about a week after pressing & storing at room temp. (I freeze it immediately). Definately way better than any commercial I've ever had (going way back), almost on a par with good charas for strength (although a diferent high).

Dry ice is available all over the country, from ice companies as a sideline. The bigger ones will have a crate in stock 24/7. Delivery of 10kg will probably set you back £50 (by van, or post if they're really shit).

If you're in the Big Smoke, Eskimo Ice (New Covent Garden) will hand over 5kg (about 7 slabs) for £25. Cash. They're open really late & weekends, just don't drive into the market (another fiver in parking). That is the cheapest way I've found of getting CO2, although anyone with access to CO2 bottles (Pub?) could make their own - homebrew methods exist, from a pair of tights to more sophisticated methods.

No-one has ever asked me why I need it, nor what I need it for. They wouldn't (it's London, FFS) However, overclocking computers, making ice cream or lifting tiles are three entirely un-related uses.

You will need a freezebox or insulated container. For your own safety, not because it stops the CO2 sublimating (it won't, much. 24 hours and it's all gone, so have everything ready). Proper coldroom gloves (not the shit the dudes in Tesco stack the freezers with) are also a must, or you will get frostbite to varying degrees, and very quickly. Not as much fun as blowing your face off with BHO, but at least as painful, debilitating and disfiguring. ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES. A few seconds will be enough for deep tissue damage, and you won't feel it or see it.

Use a metal (stainless) container for shaking. Plastic shatters easy at -78C, and weed all over the floor will be the least of your problems (see frostbite, etc.). Nylon Bubblebags work OK, but watch out for the PVC lining (of the bag) delaminating & flaking from the cold. Again, stainless or bronze gauze of the correct gauge would be preferable.

If it sounds like a lot of prep, grief and equipment, it is (less than an oil rig though). However, the hash you get out is superior to bubble bag / water extract because it still has all the terpine/cannibinoids of the glands - the CO2 takes away nothing, unlike H2O.

Hash looks very nice OMM, great info too. A quick question, when you are shaking in the metal container are you removing and collecting the resin heads at this point or just removing the heads for collection at another stage? :oldtoker:
